Local sports teams can be a great thing for a community to rally behind and come together for. In a time when professional teams pick up and leave it can feel like setting yourself up for heartbreak by becoming a fan. But these local teams exist at a point where a little support goes a long way and you really feel like you are a part of something. The Midwesterners have it figured out, they give their undying allegiances to college teams based on largely geographic proximity. Recently SF City FC was spiritually reborn when they announced a unique partnership with San Francisco’s transit agency: SF MUNI. They added the iconic MUNI Worm logo to their jerseys striking a chord with some of my friends and me igniting our fandom.

According to the official team twitter, on the launch day for jersey preorders they sold over 300, which was more than the two previous seasons combined. They said that they had sold enough to pay off most of the debt that the club had, which has to be huge for a community owned team. There has been a ton of buzz and new interest as a result and they expecting record attendance this year.
We went to their home opener a couple weekends ago to see them play against Project 51O, the Oakland team from the same division. SF City won 2-0 while looking great in their new kits. You may be asking yourself: “What league do these teams even play in?” I know I did… So I made this chart that explains Soccer in the US, including some example teams at each level.

So SF City plays in USL League 2 (USL 2), this sits in Division 4 along with other mostly Amateur Leagues. This League does quality for the US Open Cup so there are opportunities for teams in the different divisions to face off, more on that later.
Diving into USL 2, SF City plays in the Nor Cal division, and heres the standings from May 27th:

Bonus Story: El Farolito SC
Another SF fan favorite is Farolito SC which plays in the NSPL (see league chart above) and have a claim to fame for winning the US Open cup in 1993. In this years US Open they had another good run beating the Portland Timbers 2 team which created a ton of hype when the burrito boys beat a professional team. They then went to face the Oakland Roots and after a scrappy game they ultimately lost.
Call to Action: Go to a game maybe this one? See you There?
See you there!
